Program a Robot – Power things with code

Is your child interest in game design?

This session is aimed at the beginner or novice coder, girls and boys aged 10-15, but is also suitable for teens with some coding experience as there will be opportunity to explore the functionality of the Sphero and options to create more complex programs.

Spheros are ball-shaped robots that use internal motors, gyroscopes and accelerometers to move without external wheels. This “robotic ball” can be controlled using an app or by coding a programming with visual blocks representing code. Kid can immediately see the connection between the program they created and how the Sphero robots work and react.

This session is designed to enhance kid’s understanding of robots and develop logical thinking, coding and problem solving skills in order to complete challenges that require the kids to control or program the Sphero, such as an obstacle course or maze.

Some of the content that will be cover in the session:

  • How the Sphero works

  • The basics of robotics programming

  • What a gyroscope is and how it works

  • Detecting signals from the outside world

  • How to create blocks of code to make your robots perform different tasks

The kids will put all of the above into practice by developing a short game where Sphero will be used to control an avatar on screen.

All kids will also get to try Virtual and Augmented Reality.

Cost: $20 per child

*Please note: Parents must stay at the event.
