Tech Heroes School Holiday Club

The City of Melton Tech Heroes June School Club created by Western BACE and powered by the City of Melton Libraries Teams. Girls and boys ages 5-15 from City of Melton can join a range of free self-paced Robotics Lending, Pop-up, Coding, Design, Tech, intermediate and advanced challenges specifically designed, to encourage creativity, critical thinking, problem-solving and collaboration. Guided by the Western BACE STEM Squad participants will have access to group and 1-1 support and robotics kits by the Western BACE STEM Lending Library.  

During Week 1 of the School Holidays from Monday 28th June to Friday 2nd July. Parents and kids have opportunity to borrow robotics kits for girls and boys ages 5-15 from our Western BACE Lending Library, to continue having fun learning together by completing self-paced activities.

Followed by one-week special of online challenges from Monday 5th to Friday 9th July. At the end of the program participants will have a chance to submit their challenges and go in the running to win robotic kit, presented at a special prize ceremony.

 

Week 1 Robotics Lending Library Activities commence 28th June – 2nd July

STEM Short stories with Ozobot is a great introduction for girls and boys ages 5 to 8 to coding for beginners. Kids have the opportunity to get creative with tech and recreate a scene from a favourite book or compose and tell a short adventure story, mixing coding with storytelling. Designed has self-paced activity participants will learn to bring technology into narrating and bringing to life a short story with Ozobot robotics kit miniature line following robotic. Fun, engaging and low-pressure activity. No-prior experience is required. These School Holidays Parents and kids have will have opportunity to borrow Ozobot robotic kit supported by the Western BACE Lending Library, to continue having fun learning together by completing self-paced these activities.

Sphero and Cody Rockey are the perfect robotics to help kids develop computational thinking skills and the mindsets that are necessary to compete in a worldwide, technology-rich ecosystem. Girls and boys ages 9 to 12, have will the opportunity to apply their creativity, logical thinking, problem-solving and coding skills to complete fun mini challenges. Prior experience is required. These School holidays parents and kids have the opportunity to borrow a Sphero or Codey Rocky robotic kit and mini self-paced challenge instructions and resources from our Western BACE Robotics Lending Library to continue learning and have fun together.

Learn how computers work using and coding BBC Microbit robotic. The Microbit robotic teaches the basics fundamentals of how software and hardware work together. No prior experienced required. Girls and boys ages 12 to 15 will apply their creativity, logical thinking, problem-solving and coding skills to complete fun mini challenges. These School holidays parents and kids will have the opportunity to borrow a Microbit robotic kit and mini self-paced challenge instructions and resources from our Western BACE Robotics Lending Library to continue learning and have fun together.

This Introduction to Coding using “Scratch” challenge is a great activity for first time coders. Using Scratch will help girls and boys ages 9 to 12, who are new to programming language such has “Scratch” will learn to think creatively, problem solving, designing projects, communicating and bring their ideas to life.

Coding using Python is a wonderful introduction to both fundamental programming ideas and python programming language. It’s the perfect first language for boys and girls of all ages to learn the basics of software development by completing interactive coding challenges. Delivered online this challenge is designed to complete at home at children own pace with support from the Western BACE STEM Squad.

This challenge is designed for experienced programmers, focused on hands-on practical programming and group discussion. Programming using Python participant will expand participants skills and understanding in solving real-life projects and begin exploring the different components of developing, problem-solving and design.

A great Introduction for girls and boys to explore the world of 3D Design. Using free, online, beginner-friendly CAD design software "TinkerCAD" under the guidance of the Western BACE STEM Squad, kids will think, create, and make. Participants will complete a series of design challenges including designing their own vehicle and get an introduction to design thinking and how design has become an important part in today's technological world. There may also be the opportunity to print designs using the latest 3D printer technology!

Using ‘Minecraft Education Edition’, an immersive game-based learning platform that drives creativity, collaboration, and problem-solving. Participants will learn and use Code Builder to introduce fundamental computer science concepts and computational thinking whilst exploring the open world of Minecraft gaming.
